See also this article pubd Aug. 7th: "Teachers protest back against charter schools": "Public or private? Charter schools claim public school status when asking for state funding. Yet when a best part of teachers at three CICS schools signed union cards in April, Civitas changed its tune and claimed that it was essentially a uncommunicative institution. Civitas hoped to circumvent state law that empowers the Illinois Education Labor Relations Feed to recognize unions in public schools, calling instead for a secret ballot vote under the oversight of the National Labor Relations House. (In These Times, July 31)
"The NLRB narrowly agreed that Civitas was a private entity despite receiving public funds, and invalidated the union. The NLRB finding essentially allows charter schools to enjoy the best of both worlds, claiming public or private status at their own convenience. Union organizers accepted the ruling as a compromise, appreciation confident that, despite the greater challenges of a secret-ballot vote, they would win. And win they did."There's so much talk these days about public charter schools that I touch a little clarification would be useful regarding what these schools are and, quite frankly, whether UFT members are scabbing when they join them.
I be sure that's a harsh term, but according to an online business dictionary, a scab is not only someone who breaks a picket line. It's also a actually who "takes work in a non-union shop" or "under non-union conditions where a union is trying to organize a unit."
So in this context, is a UFT member who goes to exertion in a public charter school a scab?
To help sort this out, I've extracted some bits from a collection of

Once upon a time, all the Labour Party, and all the Trade Unions called for the abolition of Public Schools?
Nov 04, 2007 by vincent a | Posted in Law & Ethics
A very stereotyped reason given was that they produced a "Bunch of Queers"!
Don't you think that,in our more enlightened times, the Rule and TUC should be campaigning for more and more Public Schools. In order to produce the creative, sensitive, caring, and super-intelligent, people that this State so desperately needs.
Could even have Muslim Public Schools: in order to produce a more
caring,intellectual,
sensitive,bomber.
Hey Shevek_V
Abolishing them is a chest of :
"Pull up the ladder, Jack, we're all right"
Methinks I dick a touch of irony here! Considering that a goodly portion of the New Labour elite are the products of such schools do you really value that they want to abolish them?
New Labour have already effectively pulled up the ladder. Despite the emphasis on educational reform and the civil rhetoric and spin about educational opportunity working class people are still educationally disadvantaged, with more leaving school without unpractical or vocational qualifications.
Student loans and fees have deterred and excluded more people of working class dawn from higher education. There are now less people of working class origin in UK elite universities - ie: Oxbridge, St Andrews etc., than there were in 1926, the year of the Sweeping Strike.

Why all this fuss about Rugby union?
Sep 08, 2007 by Doctor John | Posted in Rugby
After all nobody really goes to a club match outside Wales (or Rugby league in the North of England... a differing of the game where the rules actually make sense).
It's a game for public school poofs....and I don't see why this minority sport should be dispoiling our boob tube screens

You should be aware that in Britain, Public schools are in fact private/fee-paying schools that don't caper what you call soccer, they play rugby instead..
..this is why they are referred to as RUGGER_BUGGERS owing to the predilection for homosexuality in those Schools!
What about those over-paid nancy-boys of football? You only have to stir one and he's writhing on the floor in agony (diddums). They also kiss each other and some even jump on top of each other after scoring a goal. I'd like to see how some of today's 'stars' would cost in a game against a team from the 60s with the rules of that era. I doubt they'd last to half time.

Would you like to see the Union Flag (Union Jack) displayed more?
May 31, 2009 by Stevo | Posted in Other - Politics & Government
I don't have the weight the Confederate one in the US, i meant the flag of the UK.
In other european countries, with the notable exception of germany, they fly their flags everywhere - on public buildings, schools etc.
I contemplate the UK should follow suit and do the same - be proud to be british.
And not just there, but behind gordon brown when he gives a speech, or maybe on his lapel (if that is incredibly fresh? and doesn't make him look like he's in the BNP....)
