Town Hall Throwdown

The Congressional August niche is upon us. For the next three weeks representatives and senators will be spending time in their home districts, attending barbeques and clambakes, hosting part hours, and presiding at Town Hall meetings. There’ve been plenty of news stories lately about the jittery solicitude the congressmen feel about facing constituents who may pummel them with angry questions about unemployment, the stimulus package, the shortfall, the Wall Street bailouts, the BIRTH CERTIFICATE (gasp!), and Obama Care. And the congressmen have benign reason to be worried:

“Health and Human Services Secretary Kathleen Sebelius and Sen. Arlen Specter got a private showing Sunday of the tough sell lawmakers will face over health care as audience members booed and jeered them during a township hall meeting in Philadelphia.

Among those at odds with the officials touting the $1 trillion, 10-year script was a woman who earned loud applause when she said she doesn’t want Washington interfering with her salubrity care choices.

Specter was shouted down when he said that lawmakers divide up the bills into sections and have their staffs be familiar with portions because, “We have to make judgments very fast.”

Zoinks. It’s going to be a long, hot August for these jokers who are so fresh to being treated with outright scorn by real, live people. (Usually the type of voter who shows up at Township Hall meetings in August is a concerned and active citizen who believes in the system and in their representative — they want their turn heard, but they trust and like their Congressman. Not so this year. BWAHAHAHAHAHA.)
